After receiving a transplant, Martin Clarke has come up with an idea to help lighten the emotional burden of patients who stay in a hospital for long periods of time.
The 52-year-old from Killingworth underwent a bone marrow transplant at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital in 2013. He found that he was overwhelmed by phone calls and messages from concerned friends and relatives.

Martin Clarke, Founder of Patient Latest.
Many patients are exhausted from their illnesses, answering calls and replying to texts can be overwhelming. Also the next of kin, after spending a tiresome day at the hospital have to ring several conceredfriends and relatives to give the same update on how the paitent is doing. This can also affect the ward who recieve telephone enquiries from concered parties. Another problem in is the poor mobile reception in hospitals making getting in touch to the patient difficult at times.
Martin was determined to find an easier way for patients and their next of kin, to put their loved one's minds at ease without spending hours on the phone. Now nearly three years after his treatment, Martin believes he has a solution to the problem through his revolutionary online service.
Patients and the next of kin sign up for free at www.patientlatest.com and invite friends, relatives and anyone else they want to remain updated to join their private network. They then post updates on their condition, which only those who are invited can see.Their loved ones can also leave messages of support, which patients can read when they feel up to it.

Patient Latest Official Website Homepage
Patient Latest allows patients to control their messages and update their situation with the latest information as often as they wish to. Loved ones can read a patient latest update message and leave a message in return to if they wish. No one other than the user and friends will be given the opportunity to read any of the messages that are left in the secure message posting area. Not only does this mean that patients can focus their time and energy on recovery, but people who care about them will be able to put their minds at ease quickly and easily.
Martin, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and knows he may well have to spend time in a hospital for another marrow transplant in the future, knows first-hand the benefits his website may bring and hopes it will go on to help many people at a difficult time in their lives.
Martin believes that patients or next of kin will save an enormous amount of time and money simply by using this site. As pricey phone bills and credit running out should not be a worry when patients are going through a fearful time in a hospital. The site is completely free without any hidden costs and no strings attached. It's a nonprofitable site set up by an inspirational man who from his own experience is trying to help improve the hospital experience.
Killingworth Local met up with Martin to discuss his unique idea:
Martins future plans for Patient Latest are that he would love to see it go global, he says "It's the main problem here in the UK for patients who stay a long time in a hospital, I don't see why it can't help patients across the world who face the same problem".
